What Is Anycast DNS?

Your website is identified by an IP address on your server. Computers communicate and identify each other with an IP address. Anyone who wants to visit your site must have this IP address, but of course your visitors don't type your IP address into their browser. Instead they type your domain name. This is where the domain name system (DNS) comes into play. DNS is a database of IP addresses and network names.

When typing in a domain name into your browser, DNS springs into action by translating the domain into the IP address associated with the website. Once the IP address is found, your computer can connect with the web host and the page is displayed.

With traditional DNS, your site's DNS record is located on a DNS server in a single location. If you're in the US and your visitor is in the UK, it can take awhile for the DNS server and your visitors' computer to communicate. This can ultimately slow down the performance of your website.

Anycast DNS resolves this issue. Instead of a single DNS record location, Anycast duplicates your DNS record across A2 Hosting's globally located network of servers. This brings your DNS record much closer to your globally located visitors. Anycast in turn directs your visitors to the DNS server located closer to them ultimately fulfilling their request and loading your site much more quickly.
